   Breed: Chihuahua
   Gender: Male
Age: 9 wks.  Birthday: 11/2018 (est)

Status: On Hold or Not Available at this time
This silly little sprite was left by Santa in a stocking for Xmas! The little lump of Coal is not a lump at all!!! He is an extremely brave and active chihuahua mix.

His curly tail bobs about as he sprints to “bat and box” and otherwise play with small and big dogs alike in his foster home. His “bestie” for snuggles and sneak attacks is the Great Pyrenees...he sneaks up to bite her tail or toes then snuggles in for a nap!

Coal would do best with someone who has experience with feisty small dogs, as he has a big personality in his little package! And he’s very active and needs exercise and training, as he is not a lap dog but a real go-getter eager to participate and tackle other dogs and the world! (He also can wiggle and leap out of arms and fall and hurt himself...currently on cage rest for just that thing. Healing...)

UPDATE 12/31/18 : Emmett is feeling much better, gums are pink and he’s eating. Dr. Evans is concerned about his enlarged heart and what caused the 6 pounds of fluid, so, he’ll get an Ultrasound on Tuesday.... he’d love a foster till then!!! ??

(Original post) Well, not everything is cheerful during the Holidays, we all know that, but we put our best wishes forward, our kindness towards others, or that’s what we like to think! But people don’t take responsibility and they dump their problems on others.... Christmas Eve we had this dog we’ve named Emmett dumped over our fence to the front yard at Milo. He is super sweet and likely around nine years old, but threw up some blood, and his stomach was distended... only eating bits of chicken and rice.... labored breathing, so, the options were not many, take him to the shelter where he’d be euthanized, or take care of him. Now he has had exrays, blood work AND six pounds of fluid removed from his belly! He went from 27 pounds to 21 pounds! The fluid in the abdomen was blood tinged but not blood. The heart is big but no fluid in the heart sack. His breathing was difficult because his belly was so tight. If we get a diagnosis that’s surgically treatable he may qualify for help from UC Davis, but in the interim, it’s another big ding in our emergency medical fund. Please make a donation to help Emmett by donating to the Milo Emergency Medical Fund! We have a cat to tell you about too... and fire cats coming! On we go into the New Year. Thanks for caring and helping!

**FOSTER UPDATE: "Norman has been at our house for 2 weeks now and he is much more calmer than when we first brought him home. He is still working on potty training. He plays with our other dog, Peanut and is very curious about our cat. He doesn't like to sleep alone at night so either sleeps with our other dog or with our teenage girls. Still working on getting him to sleep through the night in the crate. He loves people and is very friendly to anyone who visits. We can't wait to take him on walks soon!"**

Sweet pup, mini black Lab - though of course - NOT - super small little trooper who came to Milo along with his mom Norma. Full of energy and curiosity , this puppy would be great for any loving family. He may be too small and wiggly for very young children as puppies are fragile - but the 6 year and older set should be fine - and don;'t trip over him!!

More soon!

A gorgeous Momma dog rescued from the City of Salinas Animal Shelter along with her six girl pups. Whisked off to a fabulous foster home in Gilroy, we are getting constant updates and mom is coming out of her shell, big time. All are social and people oriented but also of course very smart, independenet thinkers! Mom is looking to connect - she has been an excellent mom to the pups - and is friendly but protective as far as other dogs near the pups - but she is elegant and charming and looking to connect! Special girl! They are fairly mellow thus far!

UPDATE 1/12/19 Maya is now full time off leash and follows me everywhere I go and went in the house she’s very calm and just lays and goes to sleep. She is not alpha at all and hangs with all size dogs . No food aggression at all in fact eats rather slowly. Great mom to her puppies shows true concern when the cry . She’s attached to me and therefore keeps close by even when on walks . Not a barker, or whinny at all. House broke, and very gentle mouth but does like a chew toy! She will make an amazing dog to someone with an indoor outdoor lifestyle.

BIG lovable personality in a little body best describes COCO! Once he becomes comfortable at home his tendency be territorial and snap can kick in. A very quiet home would be an ideal place for this little spunky fellow.

Coco was found by a family, roaming the streets and unfortunately due to apartment restrictions had to surrender him.

He's a super friendly, happy, active little guy and is all about cuddles! He will love spending hours hanging out on your lap with lots of pets.

He was diagnosed with cataracts, however it has not hindered his big, adventurous personality! His previous foster has agreed to pay for his cataracts! But, as with any animal with impaired vision, introductions should be done slowly. If you go too fast, you could startle him and when he’s surprised he will nip. Before you touch him, talk to him, say his name ... let him know it’s you!

Come down and meet this little one who has already captured all of our hearts!

Cebu is a love! He loves to play and cuddle. He has a ton of energy and is a strong, strong boy! His potty-training is going well, he already knows to go on pee-pads. He loves other dogs and playing with other dogs. He’s super attached to his brother and cries when he’s not with him. For his socialization, it’d be best for him to be with another dog and children! He’ll take a lot of attention and time. He does best on grain-free food.

We call him ‘lil G. ‘Lil G is a sweetie. He loves to play with his brother and is definitely finding his strength. Although mellow for the most part, he does of outbursts of wanting to run and wrestle. Otherwise, he sits quietly with a toy. He’s very attached to his brother and the other foster dogs and cries if they aren’t all together. It’d be best for him to be in a home with other dogs and kids. He’ll need a lot of attention! Training is getting better. He loves to explore with his brother outside. He does best on grain-free food.

Hey was found in Leona Canyon, part of the Anthony Chabot Regional Park in Oakland, on July 20th, 2018. He was lurking in the bushes near the creek. It took about an 1.5 hours from when I first saw him to when I was finally able to put a leash on him. I had 6 other dogs with me at the time, who were very helpful with getting him comfortable enough for me to get close to him. He liked the other dogs quite a lot, but was not so sure about me.

Ideal new home: The type of home that I believe would work best for him would have dog door access to a well fenced yard. He benefits from being able to let himself out during the night, as he can't always hold his bladder until morning. His ideal new owner would be able to take him to work or would work from home. So far he has not been great at being left home alone for more than an hour. If this isn't an option, I think he can do it, but would need yard access and not be able to get through/under/over the fence.

Behavior with other dogs: He is a fairly well behaved dog who gets along well with most other dogs, big or small. He is better with less hyper dogs, which he sometimes finds annoying, but it really depends on the dog, sometimes he likes them quite a lot. He has bitten one dog while with me, but it was a defensive bite. A Labrador attempted to guard a resource from him (something they were sniffing), attacking "Hey!", who bit back, tearing the Lab's lip. He sometimes growls at dogs when he first meets them if they meet face to face, but with supervision he has always been able to get over it pretty quickly and learn to coexist without conflict. He has met a few dogs he is open to playing with, but being on the older side of life, he doesn't have a whole lot of play energy in him. He does like the attention though.

Behavior with cats, people, children: So far he has been great around cats, but I've only seen him around 2 different cats. He pretty much ignores them. He is timid at first around new people, but warms up to them. He always allows people to pet him, but keeps his tail tucked until about 15-30min into the encounter. He has also been great with children, the youngest he has interacted with was 1.5yo. According to Leslie, he grew up around children. She has shown me pictures which prove this.

General Behavior: He gets anxious and restless. This usually manifests as panting, pacing, and drinking too much water. To keep him from doing this, I use a tie-down strapped to the leg of my couch (6' leash). This works well for him because he likes sleeping on my couch anyway. I'll let him loose after a couple hours, send him outside, let him drink a little, and then put him back for more nap time. At night he sleeps in this same spot on the couch, but I don't tie him down. Instead I leave my backdoor cracked so he can let himself out, and I take away all the water bowls. If I don't remove his access to water, he will drink all of it, and then sometimes pee on the couch, I assume by accident (it's not marking). So long as he doesn't have water at night, he doesn't "wet the bed". Milo will get him in for a urinalysis.

He gets anxious when crated, but has gotten much better about it. According to Leslie, he was "never confined". At first he would try to push his way out, and scraped up his snout a little. He doesn't do this anymore. Now he just pants, but can be in a crate for upwards of an hour. I've worked him up to eating in a crate, which has greatly improved his opinion of being crated. Unless I put food in the crate first, he won't go in willingly or on command, but will if I'm touching his collar. I usually don't have to apply a lot of pressure, I mostly just have to be in contact with his collar, and sometimes give a little tug towards the inside of the crate. He does not like riding in a crate in the car, but will do it, and will pant the whole time. He can however be left alone, uncrated in a parked car for up to a couple hours without a problem, but don't leave the windows open very much, if he thinks he can, he might try to climb out. If he doesn't think he can break out, he just curls up and sleeps. He's a funny old dog.

He also has some separation anxiety that kicks in if I leave him at home for more than an hour or so. This is a massive improvement compared to when I first found him, and he couldn't go more than a few minutes before freaking out. I suspect that some of his current anxiety comes from needing to pee and not being able to do so outside. When I do leave him home alone, I usually come back to find a puddle in the living room and the recycling can knocked over in the kitchen. So, it could be a lot worse.

His likes: He loves riding in the car and sticking his nose out the window. He really likes fetch and crunching on plush squeaky toys, but didn't show any interest in balls or toys until after his teeth were fixed. He plays old dog fetch, so, relatively short underhand groundball tosses. He really like

Update: Oscar’s leg is doing better, he is getting around more comfortably, his foster family doesn’t believe it needs amputation, he is having another veterinary consult... things are looking up for Oscar!

Oscar is a dog that was apparently hit by a car in October, and sat at the shelter untreated for more than a month. We are getting him into our vets to see what is the damage to his leg... after all this time it is likely to need to be amputated, we'll see!

He's a cute smaller medium sized fellow, lots of spots and dots.... more soon after his trip to the vet!

As suspected, Oscar has badly broken bones, that have healed improperly. The injury could have been older than just before coming to the shelter....

We have learned that Oscar is neutered, and dog friendly... and we think okay with cats too... he’ll need the leg amputated, as soon as he’s good and healthy, though he is used to holding it up, he gets around fine that way, but has some discomfort - without the leg, that will be gone.
