Nala is a special girl, shy of people, she has a wild edge, a pack animal - a party girl! Nala wants her kind, and space. For now she is headed to our Sanctuary, we'll see how she does and if folks want to apply they need to have other dogs and a well fenced, good sized yard space and have a knowledge and respect for dog behavior and instincts.

Meet Shadow!

Shadow is a sweet and playful adolescent shepherd mix who came to us from the heavily inundated McFarland shelter. At roughly 1 year old, Shadow is nearly full grown, but still just a puppy at heart. He is an active and energetic young guy who sadly does not get enough exercise while residing in the shelter/rescue system. He is very affectionate, and staff have noticed that he seems to be a very observant and attentive guy, quick to remember you and keep his eye on you as you walk through the shelter after only one walk or meeting with him. He desperately craves love and affectionation, as all puppies do, and is eagerly yet patiently awaiting the day he will find a forever family of his own. Despite his energy level, Shadow is gentle and attentive- very trainable and eager to learn how to please.

We think Shadow will make an excellent addition to an active home who will enjoy getting out and exercising- hiking, walking, running, playing fetch as well as one who is willing to put in a little time to give him the foundational training that all pups need for lifelong success. If you have a little extra time, Shadow has a lot of extra love!

Breed: Border Collie - Labrador Retriever Mix
   Gender: Female
Age: 1 yr. 3 mo.  Birthday: 1/2017 (est)

   Milo ID: 26775
   Current Location: The Milo Sanctuary
Jewel is happy and making friends and relaxing into life at the Milo Sanctuary for now - she was stressed in the kennel environment at Milo Point Richmond - but now she is play bowing, wagging her tail and be a sweet, silly goof! She is a sensitive dog, in-tune to the folks around her, and activities, animals, noises.... she can be a tad skittish at first but it is short lived. Once comfortable, she is solicitous and playful, and most adorable with her one ear up, one down and her gorgeous slate grey coloring.

Not a lot is known about Jewel before she came in as a stray to the Sonoma County Animal Shelter during the wildfires in early October but she may have led a sheltered life. She is a 35 pound Border Collie mix who is sweet and playful and enjoys the company of other dogs. She is very shy with new people but when she warms up she’s wiggly and silly and ready to play. She enjoys going for walks, sitting in the sun and sharing the couch with her people.

Her foster reports: "Jewel is really coming out of her shell. After taking some time to warm up, she is finally engaging my husband for some affection. I guess she realized that he wasn’t going away any time soon. I hope to report that someday I’ll find them snuggled together on the couch.

She really is an easy little dog to be around. She’s got a lot of border collie qualities without the intensity and the need to be on the move all the time. One 1/2 hour walk is all she requires to keep her happy for the rest of the day. She’s content just hanging out and will catch a nap when nothing interesting is happening. Sometimes I’ll find her back in her crate sleeping when there’s an unoccupied dog bed just a few feet away. She’s got all the qualities of a big dog but at 35 pounds she’s still very portable. She likes to play with her toys and runs after them and pounces on them when you throw them. She rarely barks, eats all her meals, and likes raw vegetables. I don’t have any kitties so I don’t know how she would be with one but my guess is that she would be afraid of one. The birds outside spook her a little sometimes! She has no separation issues and is fine being left in her crate while we’re gone. She’ll follow me around the house but I think that’s more about not wanting to miss anything.

Potty training is coming along nicely. I think Jewel may have been an outdoor dog but she’s pretty reliable now and I would say that we are just polishing up her skills. She isn’t quite able to ask how to be let out so we just keep it on a 6 month old puppy schedule.

Jewel is a fabulous little girl and will make someone a great best friend if they’re willing to take the time to win her over."

$400 adoption fee.

Breed: Border Collie - Great Pyrenees Mix
   Gender: Female
Age: 1 yr. 5 mo.  Birthday: 11/2016 (est)
   Weight: Medium (30 - 60 pounds)
   Milo ID: 26631
   Current Location: The Milo Sanctuary
Arwen came to us with her Sibling Eowyn from an overcrowded shelter that couldn't properly take care of them or socialize them. Both she and her sibling are extremely shy dogs that need a LOT of socialization to get them to act like "normal" dogs. Since coming to our Sanctuary Arwen has proved to be very skeptical of the staff but is slowly warming up to the idea of allowing us to approach her. She loves other dogs but has not yet been cat tested. She is extremely smart and LOVES cookies, so we believe she could warm up in the right home, especially if she had a resident dog that could show her how to be a little more confident. She will not walk on a leash and does not want to be crated, though we are working on that and it seems to be showing slight progress. All in all, she is a very sweet girl that would need a dedicated person to show her that the world and the people in it are not all that scary. If you are interested in adopting or fostering this sweet girl send applications and inquiries to sanctuary@milofoundation.org.
