   Name: HERSHEL

Breed: Miniature Schnauzer - American Staffordshire Terrier Mix
   Gender: Male
Age: 1 yr. 2 mo.  Birthday: 12/2015 (est)
   Weight: Medium (30 - 60 pounds)
   Milo ID: 24603
   Current Location: The Milo Sanctuary
*Return Notes* 1/9/17 "My husband and I do think Hershel would do great in a home with a single, strong, experienced dog owner. He went to MetroDog where he could play with other dogs, and when he is not there he gets 1-2 hours of good exercise every day (long walks, fetch, and dog parks where only large dogs go due to his aggression with small dogs). He eats a healthy diet of grain-free kibble and home-made stews. He has been through training.

Note that when Hershel is calm he is an incredibly sweet and affectionate dog, but he can switch in an instant to a state of fearfulness. He should not be in any home where there are children or small animals (or frequent visitors).

We also did a Wisdom Panel DNA test and Hershel's results stated that he is American Staffordshire Terrier, Miniature Schnauzer, and Mixed herding (most likely matches were German Shepard and Border Collie)."

   Breed: Akbash
   Gender: Male
Age: 4 yrs. 10 mo.  Birthday: 4/2012 (est)
   Weight: Extra-Large (over 90 pounds)
   Milo ID: 24286
   Current Location: The Milo Sanctuary
Update: Thor is again looking for a new home. Most recently he was adopted out to live on a mini-donkey ranch where he was able to be with his person 24/7 and enjoyed a huge fenced yard but despite the fact that his foster mom loves him dearly it is clear that it is not going to be the best match for him. He is a very big boy that will need someone that will be able to work with the puppy like behavior he is showing in the home. He has started chewing up items in the home and is attempting to play and mouth and his mom does not feel that she knows how to correct the behavior although we feel that with refresher training he could get past both issues as he is very sweet and eager to please. Although he is a wonderful boy who has never done so before, recently a visitor attempted to take his bone away from him and when Thor growled the gentleman then yelled at him and Thor unfortunately bit his hand. Truly Thor is a very soulful and sweet giant, and we are hoping to find him a new rural home with someone that will recognize what a fantastic dog that he is and is willing and able to be his confidant yet loving leader. Former Bio written before 2nd and most recent adoption:

Thor is looking for a new rural home ! We do want to stress that Thor is looking for a home as an only dog, and would need to live on a property where having to interact with them, even in passing would not be necessary. This beautiful boy was initially adopted to a loving family, but it became clear that he really would do best in a rural setting, which is to be expected for the breed. He bonded quickly and deeply to his family, which included children, cats and even one small dog. He slept in their room at night and loved being with them.

Much like Great Pyrenees, Akbash were breed to protect flocks from predators and are known for their gentle temperaments with all that they were raised to be included in their "family flock", but also their bravery when protecting them from a perceived threat. While in his first family Thor never showed any aggression to any PEOPLE outside of his family unit, all dogs encountered on walks around "his" neighborhood, or living in adjoining yards were viewed as wolves outside the door. Because they lived in the city, the family had difficulty even taking him for walks because of this. They were both gone for long hrs, and although he had access to a yard he would get restless and bark from stress. He does not do this here at the sanctuary and likely would not in a home where he had more time with his people and was not stressed by his surroundings.

Thor is a wonderful dog, who is looking for a loving home that will provide him with the rural property that he longs for, without feeling the constant need to keep away unknown dogs. This behavior did not start until he had established who his family was and what animals were included in the circle. In a city environment the barriers/fences/leashes, coupled with his natural inner drive to patrol his property and keep his family safe did not make for a good combination. Thor is a loyal, loving and fantastic dog who is looking for his place in the world. We are looking for a home for him in the country, where he can sleep inside and be part of the family, but also have room to roam and let down his guard. We do want to stress that Thor has shown strong aggression towards other dogs, beyond the very small dog he lived with in the past. At this point we feel that Thor would need a home where he is an only dog, who does not have neighboring dogs near by.

Update: Thor showed no prey drive towards the livestock here at the sanctuary and after being returned from the first family then spent some time in a foster home where he did not show a prey drive towards their chickens or sheep. He was not allowed free access to them for safety reasons, but he showed no interest whatsoever in the chickens inside the coop and play bowed at the sheep. He did well with the two cats in the home as well. Thor does need secure fencing if left alone in the yard. He will sleep peacefully through the night in a crate(or loose) and has good house manners. Please send applications for Thor to sanctuary@milofoundation.org

   Name: DARWIN
More Photos
Breed: Border Collie - McNab Mix
   Gender: Male
Age: 5 yrs. 1 mo.  Birthday: 1/2012 (est)
   Weight: Medium (30 - 60 pounds)
   Milo ID: 23988
   Current Location: The Milo Sanctuary
Please read Darwin's full bio before applying:

Darwin is VERY loving, loyal, gentle and extremely responsive to family, friends and those that he has been introduced to. He is perfectly house trained, has great house manners and puts himself to bed in his crate in the bedroom (with the door open) He is a treat motivated, intelligent cuddly and playful boy, but please do read further to see if your home could fit his specific needs.

Darwin was originally adopted from Milo in 2012 to a family that loves him very much and have been working with him to help him past his nervous fear based/protective issues while living in an urban environment in the bay area.. He is a boy that would do best in a rural home as he is not fond of skateboards or children, and can be reactive towards strangers and other dogs while on a walk. He was wonderful with his family and with people he could be introduced to, but his family had to be diligent when walking him to help him feel safe and secure and feel like he did not have to protect himself or them if someone they encountered did something that he felt was scary. He would sometimes get overwhelmed in the city and just lie down on a walk out of fear. They did love him very much and would have continued to make it work but given that they are now expecting a child and his discomfort with children, they had to make the difficult decision to have him come to stay with us at the sanctuary until a new rural home can be found for him

Darwin has not lived with other dogs, but has been able to visit them in their homes and get along well. HAS been territorial when they have tried to visit his however, so may be best as an only pet. He has loved to play with many dogs, but has also instigated a few altercations with other large dogs at the dog park. He does seem to love small assertive dogs such as Jack Russels and in general he seems to do best with alpha dogs as he gets conflicted about his role otherwise and that is when he might get into trouble. He can not actually fight and would prefer to just take his place as the submissive guy. His issues with other large dogs has mostly seemed to be around his family from a misguided sense of trying to protect them. He has been great in playgroups with other dogs while his family was on vacation, but aside from playdates with friends dogs, it may be best for him to be the only pet living in the home.

Darwin is an intelligent, bonding and charming boy who would thrive in an adult only country home with lots of love. He knows many words, and will even play dead, turn in a circle, and stand up from a shake when asked. Darwin does have a prey drive and would do best in a home without cats or horses.

If you feel that you have the right rural home for this sweet, loving boy who is a country bumpkin at heart, please send questionnaires to sanctuary@milofoundation.org to schedule an appointment to meet him.

UPDATE: The Peanut needs a home! This sweet little monkey looks like a tabby in her photos, but she actually has some orange mixed into her coat as well, which looks beautiful with her green eyes! She is still very much a kitten, but this sweet little girl has been waiting for her forever home for far too long, and has just even lost a baby tooth. She is an extremely affectionate and loving little girl and we very much hope that she will not be passed over and spend her entire kitten hood and beyond waiting for a loving family of her own. She is a healthy and outgoing little girl, but she does still have lasting nerve damage and her family will need to continue stimulate her to go potty and we can not say if she will ever regain full control. This is TRULY very simple and barely takes any time , less than it would take to even scoop a cat box, AND as you can hold her right over the toilet, it would actually save you money on litter! If you have ever stimulated an orphaned pup or kitten to go potty, it is the exact same thing. We are so very thrilled that she is walking, running and climbing after her injury, and so hope that this one lasting issue will not cost her a lifetime of happiness in a home! If you would like to foster her initially to see if she could be a good fit and if you are up for giving her the help that she needs, please contact us and we would be happy to set up a meeting!

Original Bio: This pretty little lady has been through quite a bit in her very young life. "The Peanut" was born here in Mendocino county, and when she was only about 3-4wks old someone accidentally slammed a door that she was walking through, which left her paralyzed from the waste down. Rather than bring her to the vet, they were going to kill her themselves but luckily someone present stepped in and saved her life but she did not know how to care for her and contacted us to see if we could help rather than have her euthanized and as we have experience with animals with spinal injuries and paralysis, we agreed to save her. We are thrilled to report that The Peanut is now walking, running and even doing little jumps!

She is a bit wobbly, but is getting stronger all the time! Unfortunately the nerves are still healing which give her the cues of how to go potty, but she only needs to have someone wipe her with an Earth Bath cat wipe, and her normal functions kick in and she starts to go normally. It honestly only takes a few moments and this is even getting MUCH better and we have high hopes that with time she may not need the "nudge" a few times a day soon! If you would like to help, PLEASE contact us at sanctuary@milofoundation.org
