Breed: Beagle - Jack Russell Terrier Mix
   Gender:
Age: 5 yrs. 1 mo.  Birthday: 6/2012 (est)
Weight: Small (less than 30 pounds)
   Milo ID: 25372
   Current Location: The Milo Sanctuary
Jack Jack is a handsome, sturdy little Beagle mix who came to us after being rescued from a hoarding situation. Although he was initially unsure of being handled, he made much progress in a foster home, and we are pleased to report that he has shown himself to be a cuddly and affectionate boy who loves to curl up in your lap. Jack jack gets along well with most little dogs, but big dogs do make him upset, and we were told that there was a large dog in the hoarding situation that used to pick on him. We feel that he would do best in a home with a small, mellow female dog. Jack does not seem as though he was abused physically, but likely had not been touched by anyone beyond the woman with the disorder. When we met him he immediately had a calm presence, but then would look very surprised when we reached out to touch him. He would happily be sitting next to us, but physical affection from us seemed like something that had not occurred to him, and he would startle and move away. We knew from photos that his foster mom had been able to pet him, and within days he was LOVING to cuddle with us and be held.

Jack does have some left over issues from his time living in the tiny trailer with more than 30 other dogs, namely that he will need to be houstrained and does not understand that he is supposed to be on the floor, rather than on counters/table etc. This happens many times with dogs from hoarding situations, as the floor gets covered in waste, and the dogs learn that they need to stay above it to stay clean. We are work

Jack is a lovely, gentle and well centered boy with an old soil. He is more than ready to find a loving and capable, predictable and adult home of his very own, who will show him how wonderful life can and should be! please email questionnaires to sanctuary@milofoundation.org

   Breed: Domestic Short Hair Mix
   Color:  Orange Tabby
   Gender: Male
Age: 10 yrs. 1 mo.  Birthday: 6/2007 (est)
   Milo ID: 25363
   Current Location: The Milo Sanctuary
Volunteer Notes, By Elle:

As you can see from the photo, Chester has had a hard life. As if it weren't bad enough that someone tipped his ear and left him in a feral cat colony, he also had a serious injury to his eye. When Chester first arrived he kept his distance from everyone and continually picked fights with the other cats. But those days are over as Chester has blossomed into a fully domesticated, interactive, charming, incredibly sweet and loving adult kitty. There's something about Chester that's thoroughly deep and soulful. His quiet demeanor and expressive green eyes have won the hearts of Staff and volunteers alike. His love is super sweet and gentle and there's something spiritual about him. So if you are looking for a kitty you can connect with on a deep level then Chester would be perfect. Chester would love to be the only kitty in the household, but he's fine with other cats as long as they leave him alone. He would do best in a calm, quiet, adult home. For more information about Chester contact sanctuary@milofoundation.org. Chester lives at the Milo Foundation Sanctuary but can also be shown in the Bay Area.

   Name: DUSTY
STAVO now DUSTY

   Breed: Border Collie
   Gender: Male
Age: 2 yrs. 9 mo.  Birthday: 10/2014 (est)
   Weight: Medium (30 - 60 pounds)
   Milo ID: 25342
   Current Location: The Milo Sanctuary
Sanctuary Notes: Dusty is a sweet and bonding boy who is extremely intelligent and needs and craves direction. He is a dog that would love to learn as many words and commands as possible and would very likely soak up agility training like a little sponge!

Dusty wants a job, he wants to learn. When just left without activity and something to do you can see that he feels like his mind is starving and he will make up his own obstacle course and track around his yard, going in the same circle and stopping at the same objects. Dusty is the kind of dog that would have been perfect for what he was breed to do, so as a pet he will need someone who wants to work with and train their dog words and commands and activities, as he would love nothing more that to have someone to work and play with, and then cozy up with at the end of the day!! Dusty loves attention and to interact, but without an outlet for his intelligence and drive he can disconnect and develop OCD behaviors, namely the circling behavior mentioned previously. When he gets into this anxious state it can be difficult to get his focus, but when you do he is on point and ready to learn. Dogs with Dusty's drive, intelligence and need for direction do not generally do well in a shelter environment (even at a sanctuary with a large yard) without enough to occupy their minds and we would love to get him into a home ASAP!! Dusty would be a dream dog for a training minded individual with an active lifestyle. Please contact us at sanctuary@milofoundation.org if you feel that you could be a great team!

   Breed: Queensland Heeler Mix
   Gender: Male
Age: 1 yr. 8 mo.  Birthday: 10/2015 (est)
   Weight: Large (60 - 90 pounds)
   Milo ID: 25172
   Current Location: The Milo Sanctuary
Xerxes is a very shy and sweet guy. He needs some TLC! Was at Family dog rescue for almost a year. *STAFF NOTES*

Xerxes is a tad shy but it's understandable because this is all very new to him. He needs a gentle hand and slow coaxing to help him open up. He walks well on leash but does get startled by sounds and movements while on walks. He allows pets and enjoyed hanging out in the sun with me. Time and patience will help this boy tremendously.

Breed: Saint Bernard - Mastiff Mix
   Gender: Male
Age: 1 yr. 5 mo.  Birthday: 1/2016 (est)
   Weight: Extra-Large (over 90 pounds)
   Milo ID: 24987
   Current Location: The Milo Sanctuary
Please read full bio before applying for Thorin:

Thorin spent some time in a home in which we learned that the ideal home for him would be a rural, predictable adult home with folks that are training minded and will work with him to get him past issues that have surfaced in re to meeting new people. He is a big sweetheart to those that he knows and loves, but has acted out towards veterinarians and visitors and will need someone that will help him to realize that they are in charge and that being reactive is not acceptable. Please contact us at at sanctuary@milofoundation.org if you would like to learn more and discuss setting up as meeting with our big handsome man! (please note that the bio below was written before he spent some time in the home)

Previous Bio: Please do note that Thorin is a wonderful, puppyish boy, but he has shown us a prey drive and we know that he has never lived with cats or small dogs in the past, so ideally we are looking for a home for him where neither are present. Even though we do not feel that he would likely intentionally injure them, he is a very big young boy who does want to give chase and we feel it would best if he were only in a home with other dogs around his size/age.

This big beautiful hunk of a dog is the fabulous Thorin! He is goofy and playful with other dogs (including males) and has been raised with SIX children, from toddlers to teenagers. He is house trained, crate trained, non-destructive and an all around cuddly/submissive/ big squishy sweetheart! It is known that both of his parents were purebreds, one a Mastiff and the other a St Bernard, and also that he is 14 months old. He will need continued training, but he is a lovely boy!

He was purchased as a little pup by a large family that thought they were soon going to be moving out of there upstairs apartment with no yard, but alas that never happened. Thorin was wonderful with the children, but sadly they felt that there was just not room for his big happy and wiggly body in their lives, and one day he was brought to a high kill overcrowded shelter, and left, alone in a kennel. He was brave the first day, but then the reality that they were not coming back sank in and he fell into a state of despair.

Not initially knowing anything about him, we happened to be visiting the shelter to rescue others and we did a double take as we walked by his kennel, and the sight of him made our hearts sink. His whole big body was shaking and he was trying to make himself as small as possible with just pure terror in his eyes. His eyes clearly said to us that he was a sweet and connected dog who's world had been turned upside down and that this level of fear was not something he was used to or knew how to handle. We could tell that in his current state, that this was not a dog that was going to pass any shelter evaluation, and we felt compelled to help him because we could feel in our heart that he was a very special dog, and we could not let that become his fate. He was so very fearful that we were not able to get a leash on him to walk him out of the shelter to spend time with him, but we could tell that he needed to get out of the shelter ASAP or his life would be in danger and as they were about to close, we asked the staff to please let us know before making any decisions re the boy in kennel 9.

As we expected, we were contacted the next day to say that indeed Thorin was now scheduled to be put to sleep, unless we were able to help. We started putting the wheels in motion, but then were told that his mom had come back for him! We had the shelter pass on our info as we were worried that it would not last, and sadly we were correct. Just a couple of days later we were called by a very sweet woman who had actually taken him in. His mom had not been picking him up to bring him home to his family, but rather to bring him to a compassionate woman who had heard of his plight. The foster loved him immediately and said he was just a wonderful dog who was playful and submissive with her male dog, but she had not taken into account his size and her own physical limitations before jumping in to help. She was a very kind woman that did not want to see him go back to the shelter knowing that it would mean euthanasia, but truly could not keep him herself any longer.

We are happy to report that Thorin is now with us, safe and sound at the Milo Sanctuary. We could not be more pleased with this gentle and lovable big baby! We are all just in love with him, and are so thankful that we happened to walk by this sweet boys kennel, during the worst point in his young life.

Thorin would love another home with children and another dog friend, but would honestly be happy with any loving, devoted and capable family of his own. He is young, well mannered, trainable and eager to please and we see wonderful things in Thorin's future! Please send your questionnaires to sanctuary@milofoundation.org! <

   Breed: Terrier - Chihuahua Mix
   Gender: Female
Age: 1 yr. 10 mo.  Birthday: 9/2015 (est)
Weight: Small (less than 30 pounds)
   Milo ID: 24986
   Current Location: The Milo Sanctuary
Mira is an exceptionally sweet, fun and lovable little lady. Since coming to the sanctuary she has won the hearts of every person she has met, which is no surprise considering she is absolutely adorable! Mira would be happy going for hikes, finding adventures or just cuddling on the couch all day. She loves people, but needs some time to warm up to strangers and does have the propensity to snap if spooked or forced into interactions she isn't ready for. Because of this we don't think a home with children would be a good fit for her. With a little time and the proper introductions she is more than willing to roll over for belly rubs, play and give/ get lots of kisses. Mira has lived with both cats and dogs and got along with all of them very well. She is a truly special little dog and will make the right adopters very happy. If you feel you and Mira could be a good match please send inquiries and adoption questionnaires to sanctuary@milofoundation.org
